The construction of the Gothic cathedral started in 1163 during the Middle Ages when Bishop Maurice de Sully laid the first stone of what is today one of Paris’ most famous monuments. It took almost 200 years to complete the sanctuary which is praised to be a prototype of Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The western façade of Notre-Dame dates back to the 13th century (completion of the North Tower in 1240 and the South Tower in 1250) and was restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc.
